Disconnected - New Works by Marco Zamora and Derek Albeck September 2008 : BLVD Gallery is proud to present “Disconnected” a showing of new works by frequent collaborators Marco Zamora and Derek Albeck. Both of these artists work maintain a dark, somewhat brooding atmosphere that speaks toward the vulnerability of the modern condition..The characters in Marco Zamora’s densely populated street scenes, created with layered ink washes, glide through the frame intent on their destinations without giving the viewer any sense of inclusion. Derek Albecks richly patterned works create a vertiginous feeling of falling and of physical absence that overwhelms ones senses. Both artists have collaborated on major projects with the shoe manufacturer Vans as well as various exhibitions throughout the west coast.

BLVD Gallery proudly presents "Pneumonia, Isolation, and Disorder" a show of new works by Deuce 7. Deuce 7 is a graffiti artist from Minneapolis who is also part of a burgeoning underground subculture of Freight train hoppers. He travels across the country riding the rails, painting his work on trains, in tunnels, squats, and wherever he can do his thing. Deuce 7's approach to graffiti comes not from a cultural identity like hip hop but from his love of the Railroad and it's history. He grew up train spotting, living in front of a huge railyard, and after noticing the colorful graffiti on the rail cars he decided that this would be a way for him to contribute to rail culture.
Deuce 7's work shares the flavor of the "Hobo" Glyphs that rail workers have marked freight cars with for over a century while propelling the look into the 21st century with his studied handstyles and vibrant color schemes. In 2007 Deuce7 made a trip to NYC to do graffiti and experience the Mecca of Street Art. After 2 short weeks he had taken the city by storm and was profiled in the Village Voice with the tagline "Is a guy from Minnesota the new king of New York street art?", A very impressive achievement for a previously unknown graffiti artist from the midwest in a city renowned for it's dislike of intruding outsiders.
This will be his first solo show of drawings and paintings on the West Coast.

“Hairy Metal Vengence”
new works by Bigfoot
June 13 - July 5, 2008
Reception June 13 6p - 10p

BLVD Gallery is proud to present the work of Oakland based artist Bigfoot. Bigfoot is a Bay area Graffiti legend and has been a major influence in the skateboard industry for close to a decade. Originally from New Jersey ,young Bigfoot fled to California to be closer to big trees . Disassociated from art school and human society, in 1994 he started writing “Bigfoot” in the streets of San Francisco with relentless fury .Working often with house paint and wooden panels ,his work depicts the conflict between the respect for nature held by the artist’s cast of Bigfoot characters and the destructive agenda of mankind. Despite his reclusive nature, Bigfoot has managed to stay active in society ,designing skateboard graphics and footwear ,showing in galleries in America and Japan, and the release of his vinyl figure with Strangeco in 2004. His eponymous character and his love of heavy metal play a major role in his studio work as well as his highly recognized street art. Please join us at his opening reception Friday June 13 to Meet the artist and Ride the Lightning.

Ghost at BLVD Gallery : BLVD Gallery is proud to present new works from NYC Graffiti Legend GHOST a/k/a Cousin Frank, a pioneering influence for many graffiti artists around the world. Having started writing in the golden age of the late 1970’s, Ghost has first hand knowledge of the many adventures and accomplishments of the NYC subway graffiti movement. The original style, vibrant color combinations, and strong sense of satire of his graffiti has managed to ease the transition naturally to his more gallery oriented pursuits.
Ghost has spent many years dedicated to the formation ( or deformation ) of the standard English alphabet creating limitless possibilities for him to subvert the language in his unique style. He has managed to create work that bears the unmistakable mark of an accomplished draughtsman without it being either overbearing or overwrought. The humor that permeates Ghosts’ work comes from the underground comics tradition from his youth, more Zapp! Comix than Marvel. Ghosts’ improvisational approach to graffiti, he never planned ahead what his work would be like, gives his current series of paintings a lightness and spontaneity that has the feeling of an inside joke between old friends.
Ghost has shown his work in galleries across the globe and has become a major part of the visual aesthetic of companies like respected streetwear brand Stussy. There is also a documentary in production chronicling the many contributions Ghost has made to the global graffiti movement. This show will be the second time that BLVD Gallery has been privileged to work with Ghost whose amazing mural in the “Claimin’ Space” exhibition was a highlight for many at the 2007 Bumbershoot arts festival.

Trade Block : BLVD Gallery is proud to present “Trade Bloc”, a group show that aims to present the global flavor of the urban art milieu. The concept of this show came out of a series of conversations about globalism and art. What are the benefits of a truly Global art market? What are the effects of the internet on artists ability to gain recognition without the participation of the traditional channels of media exposure? We have assembled a group of great artists from Asia, North America, South America, and Europe whose work we feel perfectly illustrate this new borderless world in which we live.

Good v. Evil available work : BLVD Gallery is proud to present “Good v. Evil”, A group show featuring work by some of the Northwests finest illustrators. As much a sociological experiment as an artshow, Artists were asked to make 2 pieces one representing Good the other, of course, Evil. What will be the preference? Will we see all of the evil snatched up in minutes, while the good languishes? Possibly the age old question of “What is Good or Evil?” will be raised. Either way with immeasurable help from artist Jamie Burton, BLVD will be filled with some of the most humorous, original, and truly fine examples of the burgeoning community of illustrators here in the NW.
